DMA 101 - Character Illustration

Definitely THE hardest project I've ever done in the Adobe suite. It took a LONG time (hours and hours) to figure out how best to do everything, and then do it as close to perfect as possible. Missing class didn't help, but I looked up some tips on youtube before I got started.
FINAL PRODUCT:
ElfPrinessZoeFinal

This is Zoe the Elf Princess. She is a high priestess specializing in elemental magic, particularly earth-based.
This was based on a drawing inked by gz12wk on deviantart.

My main challenges were primarily detail-oriented, and being a perfectionist this made it very time consuming (several hours over the course of a few days)

largeparts
all the big pieces in their own separate layers and sublayers, mainly colour/shape based. It got confusing knowing where to start and end each piece esp the wood and leg areas so I just made them transparent and overlapped the lines. (Selection tool, Window<Transparency)

belt
there were so many little pieces here and it was hard because of the way the lines were drawn, it was hard to see when they started/ended. Next time I definitely want to work with a sketch that has more definite lines.

braids

The braids were kind of a pain, I did it piece by piece on the same layer. It wasn't so much difficult as time-consuming (45min) to get everything right and forego a couple of the pixelated lines so it would look cleaner.

armband

settled with a curved line here, a mod from the original sketch which was a straight line that was thicker at the top

DMA - 179 Paper Zoo Assignment COMPLETE!

Level Up! 1000 Exp points!

Polar Set:

Polar-Penguin
Polar-Bear

Desert Set:
Desert-TortoiseDesert-Camel
Savannah Set:
Savannah-Lion
Savannah-Zebra
Rainforest Set:
Rainforest-BushBaby
Rainforest-Toucan
North Plains Set:
North Plains-Buffalo
North Plains-PrairieDog
Ocean Set:
Ocean-Squid
Ocean-Shark

For my optional animals, I chose animals that I like and thought would be interesting to draw without going into too much detail given that the assignment called for line drawings. It still look a long time (at least a couple hours) just to draw them all. I thought the zebra stripes would have a cool effect on the background and I really like how it came out.

DMA 179 - Paper Zoo Animals

Finally got all my drawings done - took a LONG time (at least a couple hrs) due to me being such a perfectionist (and not the best at drawing) tried a few different styles. ended up using pen on the zebra cuz it looked way better.
Threw them all on one image for now just to save space on my flickr account

Update: Took HOURS to get everything right in PS. My high res screen needs large files sizes for me to see properly so everything is huge. Perfectionism at the cost of time, took 3 hours (with breaks in between) to remove the white, position the animals, and research the info for the blurbs.

Update: Took another couple of hours to arrange the text so that there would be no splitting up of words and in box styles that somewhat complimented the watercolour backgrounds.

DMA 204: Self-Portrait

My eyes are the most defining feature of not only my face, but the core of who I am, and it is up to the viewer to perceive who I am from the picture, not for me to tell you in words. I find a lot of power in my eyes, which hold secrets clouded in smoke.
the smoke illustrates the mysterious side of myself, and my love of mystical and paranormal things, and my focus on fantasy as opposed to 'realism'
the smoke shows you that perception is an illusion and that not all of me is shown to you, rather I invoke you to find out yourself. who do you think I am? you tell me.

DMA 101 - Sports Logo

I chose to do the Mighty Ducks because it wasn't too simple but didn't look overwhelmingly complex either.

Progress Screens
Screen 1: First thing I decided to do was make a silohoutte layer in black tracing the outer shape in black then adding a fill so that I could add the internal shapes on top of it and end up with the correct stroke size that matches the original logo. I had a bit of trouble with the beak part, circular part on the left. It was a pain to manipulate the curve to get it close enough. screen1

Screen 2: After tracing the outermost outline of the logo silohoutte, I needed to figure out a way to draw the inner white border. So I took the visibility off the silohoutte layer so that I could see the reference layer and traced the white border, then filled the triangle with white so that when I turned the visibility of the black silohoutte back on, only the black border would be visible. screen2

Screen 3: Farther along the project, before I could do the yellow sticks I had to deal with their black borders. I had to do the black rectangular shapes not only for the top but for the bottom as well, because in the reference image and as seen on the final below, there's a bit of black that cuts off the white border on the bottom parts of both sticks. I made one shape and duplicated it 3 times and tweaked them to fit.

Final Product:

let's be REALISTIC here.

the reality of my life situation is, it is impossible for me to move at such a fast pace. why? because the tragedies of this past month has had me struggling against relapse, I need time to go to counselling and physiotherapy, I'm gaining weight even though I don't each much, and I need to work at my own pace. this is ON TOP of all the family bullshit, the toxic environment, my vyvanse dependance, and i can go on and on every day there is something and surprisingly i DO maintain an optimistic outlook, HOWEVER, there are time constraints and logistics which make it impossible for me to work to my standard and get EVERYTHING done. I need to drop a course. I need to slow it down cuz it's not fun this way. but there's no way I'm quitting. it's not even an option. I don't expect ppl to bend over backwards to accomodate me, that's not real life. but I have to accomodate myself. I tested top 2% in Ontario in high school for short term memory and various other attributes. I can do better than this, but first i have to fix some shit. i need time to do that.

Artist research sketch (final) James Paterson [Presstube]

Here is the final scan. I believe it incorporates both Paterson's artistic style and his concepts. I found that he is similar to myself in that he uses abstraction in a way that also sends social/hidden messages in an unconventional format. First I did it in pencil then went over in pen as I find that he does that a lot with his drawings and I like the effect. I did a partial colouring in imitation of his style as well as for the effect.

Family Circus

so I'm starting to have fun with this...

while waiting for Joe's approval on a character sketch I could use, I ended up penning a sort of fire fox faery... took a quick pic with my phone because my scanner's acting up. (great timing eh)

Now it's off to one of my other 23545 projects -_-

Artist research sketch - work in progress

So today my scanner decided to be a bitch and not scan to my usb, therefore I had to take a pic instead.

My artist is James Paterson. I'm trying to keep to his style and concepts but make them my own. He is actually VERY similar to some of the stuff I've done in the past as well as my friend adam. I love the way the messages are laid out in his pieces.
My sketch is of a broken down how to assemble a family and fail at it kind of thing, making the whole process into a sad joke that isn't actually funny. I won't go further than that, the rest is something to be interpreted on one's own.

Recovery

It has been the worst week of my life and I am extremely behind in school. I got sick with a fever of 103, a lot of bad things happened at home and I had a minor breakdown, It looks like I'll be moving out for the summer, relationship drama and I lost my brand new phone. but I think the bad wave is over, because this just happened:
